eScan Internet Security Suite

ESCAN INTERNET SECURITY SUITE 2016

When you are looking at buying one of the top antivirus and security packages, eScan is not going to be one of those that is going to be on top of your list, simply because you may not have heard of the company before.

The company behind eScan is MicroWorld Technologies which is a software solutions development company specializing in Antivirus, Antispam, Content Security and the prevention of network intrusions.

On review we have eScan Internet Security Suite with cloud protection for 2016. The independent antivirus testing labs that include eScan in their reports give it generally good marks, just below that of Bitdefender and Kaspersky, and better than a few of the well-known names in antivirus.

From the eScan homepage you can Buy Now or Try Now. Once downloaded, the antivirus package will unpack itself and install the software. Once installation is complete you will then have to reboot your system to finish the antivirus integration and setup.

On opening eScan Internet Security Suite 2016 you are presented with the Main Window. This comprises of eight large panels on a world map background. The panels are file anti-virus, web & parental controls, privacy control, mail antivirus, firewall, cloud protection, anti-spam and endpoint security. Clicking a panel lets you drill down to turn features on and off or adjust settings.

We have to say, the User Interface does look dated, and it looks and feels more like software from Windows XP era. That said, it is not all about looks, it’s how it works to protect your system, but some users might be put off by the look and feel of the software.

File Antivirus

The file anti-virus is real-time antivirus protection with cloud based technologies. With latest cloud technology, eScan identifies and safeguards your computer from latest and unknown threats without waiting for daily or traditional virus signature updates.

Web & Parental Control

The parental controls from eScan are not as good as those by Kaspersky or Bitdefender, but for most users they will be good enough. Parents can choose to enable parental control features by associating the children's Windows user accounts with one of four profiles. The available profiles are Adult, Adolescent, Teenager, and Walled Garden. Under that last profile, the content filter blocks all Internet access except sites that parents have actively whitelisted.

There are quite a few more tweaks available. As for advanced features like instant message monitoring and control, social media monitoring, and remote management, you won't find those here, you will have to try another internet security suite with more parental control features or go for a full-scale parental control and monitoring standalone product like ContentWatch Net Nanny 7 or Qustodio Parental Control.

Privacy Control

Privacy control is a utility to clean-up your tracks. It cleans cookies, cache, browsing history, recycle bin, recent accessed files, and so on. You can do this manually, or schedule it to run automatically. There is also a handy secure delete tool to enable you to erase specified files and folders permanently.

Mail anti-virus and Mail Anti-spam

The eScan mail anti-virus and anti-spam are for those home and small business users who use an email client, such as Outlook, Thunderbird and Inky, opposed to web-based email. Scanning email can significantly slow the process of downloading email, but if you use an email client it is always best to scan for any threats.

Firewall

The firewall in eScan Internet Security Suite 2016 will work for most users in its default settings, but if you know how these things work, you can dig right into the settings and configure it to your tastes and preferences.

Endpoint Security

Endpoint security is unusual in an internet security suite, but as this is aimed at small business as well as home users more security vendors seem to be adding endpoint security features. The endpoint security module enables you to lock down a computer and only run applications you specify.

eScan's Device Control lets you limit what devices can be used. In particular, you can require a password for access to USB devices in general, but whitelist specific permitted ones. If an employee inserts a USB drive found in the parking lot, eScan won't let it connect.

Application Control is the other half of Endpoint Protection. It comes pre-configured to block a collection of computer games, instant messengers, music players, and peer-to-peer sharing applications.

Parents may find this feature useful as well. You can add any program you want to the blocking list, and the kids can't defeat this feature by moving or renaming the program, especially useful when used with the parental controls.

Conclusion

Not the most user friendly interface, and it looks a bit dated, but it does just what it is supposed to. eScan Internet Security Suite does well in tests run by AV tests, like those run by AV-Test and AV-Comparatives.
